Whether you are looking to go totally plant-based or just switch out some elements of your Christmas dinner to meat and dairy free alternatives, there’s a real smorgasbord of options available this year.
The variety and number of plant-based foods available demonstrates the continued investment big UK supermarkets are making in plant-based foods, releasing a number of new, meat and dairy free options as part of their Christmas food offerings.
We've rounded up the most exciting plant-based festive foods available in your local big brand supermarket so you can start planning your compassionate Christmas feast.
WAITROSE
Waitrose’s centrepiece Christmas plant-based dish is a snazzy Vegan Jewelled Roast - a mushroom-based roast with caramelised onions and chestnuts and a layer of clove-spiced apricot, topped with more apricots, cranberries, sunflower seeds, crushed chestnuts and pine nuts. It also comes with 6 vegan No Pigs in Blankets as an extra treat. There are also plenty of options for starters and party foods with Mini No Beef Empanadas, Vegan Melting Sweet Chilli Bake, Oriental Vegetable Snacks and Mini Vegetable Spring Rolls.
SAINSBURYS
Sainsbury’s have a range of plant-based Christmas food on offer this year, for the main event they have a mushroom and soya protein based Turkey-Style Crown with Sage and Onion Stuffing and Star Melt, Three Nut Roast with Spiced Orange & Cranberry Glaze and Meat-Free Festive Wellington. You can get the party started with a selection of light bites including Plant Pioneers Party Food Selection, No Prawn Tempura, Smoky No Cheese Bake with Garlic and Mini Black Bean Tacos.
There’s also a Plant Pioneers Vegan Trimmings Selection, so you don’t miss out on any of the extras, and a Chocolate Cookie No-Cheesecake for dessert.
TESCO
As part of their Festive Food to Order Range, Tesco have a number of plant-based options, including the Wicked Kitchen No Turkey Roast Crown or Tesco Finest Sweet Potato and Red Cabbage Christmas Log. For pudding, you can choose from the Finest Stem Ginger Tiffin Cracker, Raspberry & Vanilla Layered Dessert or Chocolate and Salted Caramel Cake. They also have some delicious party snack options, such as Plant Chef No Prawn Tempuras and Fried Vegetable Gyoza.
M&S
M&S have a big selection of plant-based festive foods with some fantastic options for a meat and dairy free meal. There’s the Plant Kitchen Stuffed Vegan Turkey Joint and a Roast Beetroot Bourguignon Pie.
There’s also a Oriental Taster Selection, Vegan Pigs in Duvets and the cute Reindeer Steamed Bao Buns. For dessert there are Mini Chocolate Tortes, Sticky Toffee Pudding, plant-based Christmas Pudding and more!
LIDL
At Lidl, this Christmas you can choose from their Deluxe Showstopper Garland, Deluxe Nut Roast and Deluxe Winter Sharing Wellingtons for the main event. If you only have a couple of people to cater for, Lidl also offer 2 individual Vegan Festive Nut & Veggie Roasts with Gravy. For snacks they have Vegan No Duck Spring Rolls in their party time range, as well as other tasty plant-based alternatives.
ALDI
Plant-based highlights from Aldi include their No Turkey Crown With A Cranberry And Chestnut Stuffing, No Beef Wellington, and the Vegan Festive Wreath with butternut squash, chestnuts, cranberries and mushrooms, topped with candied orange and rosemary, with a cranberry glaze - yum!
There’s also some essential extras – such as Specially Selected Cranberry, Orange & Chestnut Stuffing – and Southern Fried No Chicken Stars, Berry Strudel and Chocolate and Hazelnut Churros for that all important Christmas dessert!
ASDA
At Asda you can get yourself an Vegan Turkey Crown with Umami Basting Stock, Extra Special Butternut Squash, Chestnut & Cranberry Wreath or Extra Special Vegan Meatless Loaf for Christmas Dinner with a variety of plant-based Christmas accompaniments in their Meat-Free Christmas Trimmings Selection.
And for a little pre-Christmas dinner appetiser, there’s Extra Special Vegan Crab Croquettes with Red Pepper & Roasted Garlic Puree. Plus, if you like a bit of cheese at Christmas, Asda have their very own Plant-based Cheeseboard which features a range of vegan cheeses including jalapeno and chilli cheddar, and Wensleydale and cranberry. For a sweet treat, try their Extra Special Free From Honeycomb Tiffin Star.
MORRISONS
You can kick off Christmas with Morrisons’ The Best Vegetable Tempura Nests, No-Prawn Toast Baguettes, Plant Revolution Vegan Mushroom Pate and Vegan Platter.
