£30 could help power crucial work with partners to end the bear bile industry in Vietnam
In Vietnam, bears are forced to endure excruciating procedures to harvest their bile, so it can be used in products and medicines.
Snatched from their mothers in the wild or bred in captivity, bears are trapped for years in tiny cages. They face a lifetime of trauma and torment as bile is painfully drained from their gallbladders again and again.
Confinement takes a heavy toll on bears’ physical health, too. Denied the chance to move freely or eat a varied diet, many become emaciated and lose their fur.
Bear bile is used in traditional medicine and for luxury products including wine, soda and tonics. But this illegal industry is not only unspeakably cruel and it’s totally unnecessary. Alternatives to bear bile exist that are both affordable and effective.
We’re working with local partners in Vietnam to track and rescue bears, make sure laws are enforced and bring down this illegal trade.
Will you help?
Your kindness will help protect animals worldwide, and stop bears being abused and exploited for their bile. We’re fighting cruelty wherever we find it – will you join us?
In North Vietnam, we supported the rescue of three bears after 21 years of torture.
The bears were kept in tiny cages, each one barely bigger than a phone box. Farmed for their bile, they were subjected to horrific physical and mental suffering.
We worked with partners providing equipment and training for microchipping bears. Any bears that are identified without a microchip and/or registration papers, deeming them illegal, are confiscated. Thanks to this monitoring and our partners, all three bears were freed and taken to live in peace and safety at a sanctuary.
They’ve since been renamed Hy vong, Vui and Tuong lai, meaning ‘hope’, ‘joy’, and ‘future’.
