Factory farms currently use around 75% of the world’s supply of antibiotics

£10 could help us expose the inhumane treatment of factory farmed pigs.

£20 could help us push supermarkets to only stock high welfare meats that reduce the need for mass antibiotic use.

Tricia Croasdell speaks at the parliamentary reception for banning the use of antibiotics on factory farms in the UK.

£30 could help us lobby Governments to ban the mass overuse of antibiotics in factory farming.

An estimated 600 million pigs are currently trapped in the factory farming industry where they are kept in overcrowded, unhygienic and restricted conditions.

A female pig on an industrial farm can be less than 1 year old when she is artifically inseminated for the first time. Her piglets will be taken away from her just 3 weeks after they are born, and will undergo cruel mutilations like tail and teeth clipping, all with no pain relief. This inhumane treatment makes them more vulnerable to disease and infection, and so they are routinely fed antibiotics to prevent them becoming ill. But this is creating a problem of its own.

Around 75% of the world’s supply of antibiotics are used in factory farming, and are dramatically contributing to the rise of antibiotic resistant superbugs. These are contaminating our meat and waterways, and putting us at serious risk. Currently, antibiotic resistant superbugs are responsible for 1 million deaths a year. If we don’t act now, this number is set to rise to over 10 million deaths each year by 2050.

We’re fighting to transform the global farming industry before it’s too late. This involves calling for higher welfare standards on pig farms that give pigs a better life and allow them to perform their natural behaviours. A happier life will reduce stress, injury and disease, meaning there is no need to continue harmfully overusing antibiotics.

Beyond this, we’re calling on supermarkets to only source meat from higher welfare suppliers, reducing the demand for factory farmed meat, and gathering evidence on how industrial farming doesn’t just harm pigs but our planet and health too. You can help us continue this vital work by donating today.
