31 monkeys have been rescued from Indonesia's last 'training centre'.
Support their recovery31 dancing monkeys have been rescued from a brutal life. Now they need help to recover from their trauma.
Already traumatised from being stolen from their families, these poor monkeys endured unimaginable abuse as they are 'trained' to become dancing monkeys. Beaten, starved and hung, the trainers don't stop until these monkeys are completely broken.
We were there at the start when our partner Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN) begun the fight to free Indonesia's dancing monkeys, and with the end of the practice finally in sight, we joined forces again for the last major rescue.
The good news is that the rescue has now taken place, and 31 monkeys have been rescued and taken to JAAN’s centre! Each of the monkeys will be quarantined for between two to three months to reduce the risk of disease transmission. During this period, they will undergo a series of veterinary examinations including x-ray tests to detect whether they have any gunshot wounds. Many of these macaques will have been shot when they were poached from the wild, often with air rifles that use small bullets that wound instead of kill.
The rescued monkeys will now be able to explore new diets and environments, as well as develop their natural instincts such as climbing, foraging and predator avoidance skills. JAAN will also do extensive work to create new family social bonds between the rescued monkeys so they can hopefully be released together back into the wild
Together, we can help give these 31 abused monkeys their lives back.
