Why dolphins and whales shouldn't be kept in captivity

Blog

Captivity is a cruel reality for thousands of dolphins and whales, who are made to live in environments that are drastically different from their natural habitats.

Here are some key reasons why these magnificent creatures should not be kept in captivity:

Cruel living conditions

Whales and dolphins are wild animals with complex social, behavioural, and intellectual needs. In captivity, they are confined to spaces that are only a fraction of their natural habitats. This confinement leads to severe stress and health issues.

Physical and psychological suffering

Captive whales and dolphins often exhibit stress-related conditions such as ulcers, stereotypical behaviours (like self-mutilation), and abnormal aggression. These issues stem from the inability to perform natural behaviours.

Unnatural behaviours

The tricks and performances seen in marine parks are unnatural and would never occur in the wild. These behaviours do not reflect the animals' natural instincts or social structures and the training methods used are known to have a detrimental effect on the animals' wellbeing. This leads to further psychological stress.

Shorter lifespans

Studies have shown that captive whales and dolphins often live shorter lives than their wild counterparts. The stress and unnatural living conditions take a significant toll on their health.

Separation from families

In many facilities, calves are separated from their mothers when they are far too younh, causing immense stress and anxiety. This practice is inhumane as these animals have strong family bonds and social structures.

Ethical alternatives

Whale and dolphin shows are outdated. Tourism can play a crucial role in ending the captivity of whales and dolphins by promoting more ethical alternatives. Responsible whale and dolphin watching tours in the wild offer a humane way to observe these animals from a distance.

Public opinion and demand for change

Public opinion is shifting, with many tourists preferring to see dolphins and whales in the wild rather than in captivity.

The captivity of dolphins and whales for entertainment is a practice that causes significant suffering and health issues for these intelligent and social animals.

Unfortunately, large tour operators like TUI Group, who should be setting an example within the industry, are still selling tickets to entertainment venues where dolphins and whales suffer every day of their lives. Watch this space.
