TUI Faces Growing Backlash Over Dolphin Entertainment
News
Will TUI finally listen to its customers? Because they have spoken and very clearly don’t want to support travel companies that promote dolphin captivity for entertainment purposes.
A new survey of TUI customers and potential customers across five countries -- Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Sweden - reveals that a staggering 84% believe TUI should stop selling tickets to venues like Loro Parque, which breeds dolphins and whales for entertainment. Two-thirds even say this change should happen as soon as possible.
The numbers show that this isn’t just a moral issue, it’s also a risk to business. TUI could lose up to 34% of its potential customers if it continues to sell these tickets based on the survey data received.
Animal welfare matters to tourists
Across all five countries surveyed, 83% of TUI customers and potential customers say that animal welfare is important when choosing a travel company or experience. Ethical travel isn’t a niche concern anymore, it’s increasingly becoming an expectation.
Unfortunately, despite the overwhelming public demand, TUI continues to sell tickets to marine parks that exploit dolphins.
The financial cost of ignoring public opinion
TUI’s continued association with captive dolphin entertainment is damaging the brand and driving customers away.
- Germany-based TUI Group continue to sell captive dolphin entertainment, yet in Germany, 83% would book with TUI if they dropped dolphin captivity, but only 40% would if they didn’t.
- The pattern is the same across all countries: travellers actively consider a company’s ethics when making their decisions.

The world is turning away from the cruelty of keeping whales and dolphins in captivity. Many travel companies have already withdrawn support for marine parks that exploit these animals, yet some, like TUI, continue to profit from ticket sales to such venues.
It’s time for TUI to drop dolphin entertainment... before its customers drop them.
It’s now time for TUI to do the right thing
TUI is out of step with its customers. People want ethical travel options, and they are willing to change their booking decisions based on whether a company aligns with their values.
Continuing to profit from captive dolphin entertainment means that TUI is making a short-sighted decision that risks both its reputation and its bottom line.
